Gibraltar Stock Exchange Integrates Blockchain into Trading System

The Gibraltar Stock Exchange (GSE) has signed a strategic partnership agreement with the firm Cyberhub Fintech Holdings Ltd. in its bid to fully integrate Blockchain technology into its trading and settlement systems.

If successful, this integration will make GSE one of the most progressive financial centers in Europe. Under the deal, Cyberhub Fintech will also become a stockholder of the exchange.

In its statement, the GSE said that the project showed that it is committed to expanding its capital markets network as well as its reach across Asia.

GSE also hopes to become one of the first regulated exchanges in the world to fully integrate Blockchain technology into its operational procedures.

Part of the statement reads:

"The investment signals the Gibraltar Stock Exchange's continued commitment to expand its capital markets network and influence in Asia as well as its ambition to become one of the world's first regulated exchanges to fully integrate use of blockchain into its operational processes from ICO to IPO.”

Gibraltar government’s efforts to adopt Blockchain technology

The partnership is just one of the exchange’s projects that use Blockchain technology. In 2016 GSE launched an exchange-traded instrument (ETI) linked to the price of the digital currency Bitcoin.

The BitcoinETI was issued by the company iStructure PCC PLC. Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are based on Blockchain technology.

Meanwhile, the government of Gibraltar has also launched a scheme aimed at establishing guidelines for the use of Blockchain.

In May 2017, the Ministry for Commerce published a draft proposal for the regulation of the technology in Gibraltar, which is a British Overseas Territory, for public comment.

These developments are major proofs of the attractiveness and effectiveness of Blockchain and digital currencies as promising tools in various industries.

These are interesting times, indeed, for both the Blockchain and the cryptocurrencies it powers.
