The OnePlus 8 Lite is coming to take on the smartphone mid-range

OnePlus intends to launch the OnePlus 8 Lite, a new smartphone below the OnePlus 8 and the OnePlus 8 Pro. The first rendered images now show what it could look like and first technical specs reveal what it is all about.

OnePlus could move away from its two smartphone strategy and do the same as Samsung, Huawei, and Apple. The three manufacturers each offer three versions of their high-end smartphones. In the past years, there have always been two versions of OnePlus - a conventional and a "Pro" version.

Next year could, therefore, be a turning point in Chinese product policy. In addition to the expected OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro, there will be a OnePlus 8 Lite. Up to now, OnePlus has held back with such slimmed-down flagships. Only the OnePlus X was in the middle class. However, OnePlus did not celebrate great success with it. With the OnePlus 8 Lite, this could be different. The first information has now been shared by 91mobiles. For this purpose, our colleagues created render images based on the rumors.

Not much is yet known about the technical specifications of the Lite variant. However, the design already reveals a few details. That's no fingerprint sensor to be seen. So we can assume that it has one hidden under the display. A dual-camera can be detected. That's a little surprising since both OnePlus 7s already have a triple camera. Another possibility would be for OnePlus to upgrade the dual camera with a ToF sensor. However, OnePlus could also establish the technical distance between the "real" flagships and the slimmed-down model.

OLED is the most likely the display technology. We can assume that the resolution is more in the FHD+ range than in the QHD range reached by the current models. The front camera meanwhile looks through a central hole in the display at the top. A headphone jack for older headphones or microphones is not visible.

However, the pictures not only allow conclusions to be drawn about technical specs, they also show what the smartphone will look like. And here you could think that the designer had mainly taken inspiration from Samsung. Not only the front with the so-called hole-punch instead of a dewdrop notch reminds me of the design of the Galaxy Note 10, but also the camera module on the back reminds me of the Apple's iPhone 11 Pro or that of the Google Pixel 4.

The rest of the smartphone is also supposed to offer an off-the-shelf design. Rounded corners and a flat display design strengthen the impression. The back is rounded towards the long sides and the frame is obviously made of metal.

What the alleged OnePlus 8 Lite will look like in the end remains to be seen, but the render images look quite realistic. With the technical specs, we must be patient but the rumor mill will certainly be bringing more information soon.

A hole in the front and a curved screen

With more than eight months to go before its presentation, the first OnePlus 8 renderings have already arrived. The future flagship of OnePlus is surprising in terms of design choices, some of which are in contradiction with the latest OnePlus 7T. This OnePlus 8 has a completely borderless design that is very attractive. Overall, the smartphone takes the general lines of the OnePlus 7 Pro but instead of a pop-up camera the smartphone has a hole in the screen in the top right.

For the rest, we find a beautifully curved AMOLED screen on both sides (probably 90 Hz) of 6.5 inches. The dimensions of the device remain quite impressive with a size of 160.2 x 72.9 x 8.1 mm. We also learn that the device will finally be compatible with wireless charging.

Triple camera in the back

The photos published today confirm not only the appearance of the camera but also the presence of a triple photo sensor on the back. However, the circular design of the photo module and the return to a vertical layout, as is the case with the OP7 Pro, are already a thing of the past.

Unfortunately, it will be May or June 2020 before we know everything about the device. Ditto for the prices. However, it is surprising how early these leaks are coming out. We're not sure if the Chinese manufacturer appreciates that renders of its device are already online while the previous generation is not even official yet.
