Android Central accidentally published a detailed hands-on of the new flagship smartphone, the Motorola Edge+. And that's what it's all about. The reviewers are blown away by the new $1,000 mobile phone of the Lenovo subsidiary. It has been a long time since people were so enthusiastic about a new Motorola mobile phone, writes the author. The last time Motorola could impress so much was in the days of the second generation Moto X. So what does this exciting Motorola phone have to offer that could really shake up the technology world once again?
Motorola installs in the new super-flagship a brand new Snapdragon 865 including a 5G modem with 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM for the most demanding computing operations. Internally, data is stored on the 256GB of UFS 3.0 memory. According to Android Central, the 5,000 mAh battery is supposed to provide a runtime of up to two days with according to statements from Motorola. It can be supplied with new energy via an 18-watt power supply unit, but cannot keep up with other current flagships in view of peak charging capacities of up to 30 watts and more. The Motorola Edge+ charges wirelessly with up to 15 watts.
The Motorola Edge+ has a curved display with a 90 Hz refresh rate
When reading the article it quickly becomes apparent that the Edge display of the Motorola Edge+ is the absolute highlight. Not only does the curved display offer all the advantages of this type of display, but edge-haters can switch off the curved sides within the settings. Then the visualized part of the smartphone lies flat. The panel is a 90 Hz OLED display with a 6.7-inch screen diagonal and Full HD+ resolution. Here, however, the reviewer criticizes the decision not to go to 120 Hz with Quad HD resolution.

Another novelty is Motorola's user interface called My UX, which is pre-installed with Android 10. In addition to fan-loved software features like Moto Actions, the reviewer says it allows new controls for customizing app icons, system colors, fonts, and other visuals.
Interesting is also the view of the built-in camera in the 203-gram smartphone. Buyers get a triple optical zoom and a Time-of-Flight sensor; absolute premium equipment. The triple camera consists of a 108-megapixel sensor, an ultra-wide-angle sensor with 16 megapixels, which also functions as a macro sensor, and an 8-megapixel telephoto lens with the same 3x optical zoom.
The published hands-on concludes with a mixed verdict however, it is enthusiastic about the strong features from Motorola. It is said that the Edge+ promotes Motorola back into the flagship league. On the other hand, the update schedule is not quite clear yet.
Editor's note: We feel for Android Central here. It can happen to anyone. A device that is under embargo is pre-tested, the article is written, the photos are taken and then it can happen that the publication date is not set correctly in the Content Management System (CMS), or there is a bug, and the embargo is broken. The hands-on article from Android Central has been taken offline, but due to the numerous screenshots that circulate on Twitter, a copy of the article is still publicly available.
Motorola Edge+: what the pictures tell us
The design is not exactly new. Even the name, Motorola has taken from the past, if the rumors are true. Samsung had rather moderate success with its Edge display, though. Nevertheless, the year 2020 seems to bring back the trend. The Huawei P40 Pro, which will soon be presented via a live stream, also comes with an extremely curved display and virtual keys. Motorola seems to also be getting in on the act now with its own new Edge display. In the pictures, we don't only see the panel, which is strongly curved to the sides, but also physical keys.

The protruding camera module on the back of the Motorola Edge+ is also clearly visible. This is a triple camera with a 108-megapixel sensor. According to XDA Developers, the basic model without the "+" addition should have a 64-megapixel sensor here, which is supplemented by a 16-megapixel wide-angle lens and an 8-megapixel telephoto lens.
Further technical details point to an installed Snapdragon 865, 12GB of RAM and an ample 5,000 mAh battery. In addition, a 6.7-inch display with a resolution of 2,340 x 1,080 pixels and a refresh rate of 90Hz will be used in both devices. In addition to all the luxury class equipment, it is surprising that Motorola will also install a 3.5mm headphone jack. A USB-C port is also available for charging and data transfer, but there is probably no quick charging functionality.

What we do not know yet
Quite a lot of details about the Motorola Egde and Edge+ are already known. The most important question is probably when this will launch in the different markets around the world. It is assumed that all the major markets will be served before the end of the year. We remain excited and looking forward to seeing Motorola back at the top table once again.
